Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region and is known for its rich history, art and architecture. It is the cradle of the Renaissance and therefore one of the most famous cultural cities in Europe. Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1865 to 1871.
The city has many famous sights, one of the most iconic places is the Florence Cathedral, also known as the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. This imposing cathedral has a beautiful dome that can be seen from afar.
Another famous sight is the Ponte Vecchio. This medieval bridge over the Arno River is known for its jewelry shops and offers beautiful views of the city.

Florence is the most pronounced Renaissance city in Italy. Nowhere else in Italy so many buildings and works of art from this period can be found. Famous Renaissance artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti spent part of their lives in the city and some of their masterpieces can be seen here.
The city is also known for its culinary traditions. Be sure to try the local specialties such as the famous bistecca alla Florentina and of course a gelato.
